What we delivered: Building control for internal refurbishment of the Weston Library in Oxford.
The Bodleian Libraries is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and main research library of the University of Oxford. With over 12 million items, it is the second-largest library in Britain (after the British Library).
The works provided improved storage facilities for rare and fragile materials, as well as better facilities for researchers, readers and visitors. Structurally, the internal core of the building was completely remodelled with the removal of ‘race track’ corridors and development of atria and hanging boxes.
The library contents are delicate and precious and we worked with our own specialists, local fire brigade and Oxford Colleges’ fire safety adviser to come up with unique solutions to some very challenging fire engineering issues.
