Leading the way in training and development for building control 30th May 2019Back
Over the past decade, universities have removed the dedicated BSc (Hons) Building Control Engineering degree from their prospectus. This means there is a lack of any current qualifications to develop trainees or other individuals looking to start a career in building control.
The only Level 3 qualification offering a 10-credit building control module is the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, and the only higher education qualification offering a 20-credit building control module is the HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.
Technical Training Manager David Barley recognised the detrimental effect this had on the industry and the pressure on recruitment. To help combat the skills shortage, Aedis began the process of gaining centre approval with the ABBE (Awarding Body for the Built Environment) which was achieved in 2015. This centre approval enabled Aedis to develop specific qualifications:
The NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Building Control has 8 modules and the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Building Control Technical Support has 10 modules; all modules are specific to building control.
Both qualifications involve a variety of assessment methods, including communication, questioning and answering, report writing, plan checking, presentations, witness testimony, ethical standards, and direct observation.
Key skills and knowledge are achieved not only through an individual’s day-to-day activity, but through communication, ethical standards, professionalism and overall quality. This is embedded in the qualifications through guidance found in building control performance standards, changes to building regulations, CIC requirements, and standards from professional bodies such as the CABE, CIOB and RICS.
These qualifications form the backbone of Aedis training process and have enabled the company to successfully design distinct pathways for new trainees:
Aedis are delighted to be leading the way when it comes to providing training and development for building control.
